This article explores excess deaths–the deaths beyond the expected number of deaths under normal conditions–in the COVID-19 pandemic. It discusses the socioeconomic effects of the pandemic, the role of death certificate data, and potential causes of underreporting of deaths directly and indirectly related to COVID-19.
